2024-05-15 Reconductoring Transmission Lines

Good article a few months old.  JHAT recently had this reconductoring topic.  This article also describes the Heimdall Ball temperature monitoring.  One thing that has not been talked about is the use of BESS – battery energy storage systems – to reduce the peak load on the transmission lines.  That’s what they did in Australia

2024-05-13 Autonomous Solar Tracking System

For each direction of travel, it consists of two solar cells connected in parallel opposing to a motor that’s geared down to turn the tracking so both solar cells are in the shade.  https://www.facebook.com/reel/7341922389263306?mibextid=9drbnH&s=yWDuG2&fs=e

2024-05-12 Giant Batteries Are Transforming the Way the U.S. Uses Electricity

This link to the article is supposed to be free, and *not* behind a paywall.  This well-researched article is a good article, with some statements that are disputable.  One example is that they state that lithium batteries are flammable.  The LFP cells now used in battery storage systems are low to not flammable.  There are

2024-04-29 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Might Have Already Peaked – They Need To Fall FAST

This is a long article in Vox with many links and some important graphs.  Climate Change is already affecting the Earth. https://www.vox.com/climate/24139383/climate-change-peak-greenhouse-gas-emissions-action

2024-04-22 Heliotech Heliosol Flexible Solar PV Sheets Adhere To Surfaces

It comes in a roll.  They said 85 Watts per square meter, which is not that much, but still adequate. https://www.facebook.com/reel/963442381939420?mibextid=9drbnH

2024-04-18 Wind Power Was Record Growth in 2023

Quote: “”The global wind industry installed 117 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity in 2023, making it the best year ever for new wind energy – here’s what happened and where.”” 2023 was a record year for wind power growth – in numbers

2024-04-16 California 100% Renewables for 30 Days!

That’s great news! One thing I just remembered is that the nuclear power plants (Diablo Canyon, Palo Verde) usually shut down for maintenance in the spring when demand is lowest.  Otherwise they normally run 24/7 and there wouldn’t be any time during the day when it would be 100% renewables. https://electrek.co/2024/04/15/renewables-met-100-percent-california-energy-demand-30-days/

2024-04-14 Drone Recharges From HV AC line

Wow!  It just clips onto the HV cable and recharges while it’s hanging there.  Presumably the drone has an inductive pickup coil that’s up against the conductor that’s carrying hundreds of amps.  I bet Joe Tegtmeyer would like to have one of these! https://www.facebook.com/interestingengineering/videos/1123581112297321/?mibextid=NnVzG8 https://www.facebook.com/reel/415716777728231?mibextid=9drbnH&s=yWDuG2&fs=e

2024-04-12 Florida GOP Operative Admits Role In ‘Ghost’ Candidate Scheme That Defeated Utility-targeted Dem

Dark money supported 3rd party candidates who siphoned off votes from Democrats, giving Republicans state congressional seats.  This money came from Florida Power & Light.  It was meant to defeat those who supported clean renewable energy. https://floodlightnews.org/florida-gop-ghost-candidate/?ref=im-a-reader-newsletter

2024-04-10 IOUs, Going Off Grid

The transmission pylons are a few million dollars a mile, and the undersea cables are even more expensive. And the undersea cables are more difficult to maintain, as is anything in a marine environment. So the cheap SOBs in the utilities typically choose the lower cost towers. As for the US West Coast, rooftop solar
