Tradeoffs are the major problem. The cost of half inch diameter copper wire to wire a home with 12V would be prohibitively expensive; and 5V would be 2.5 times more prohibitively expensive. It would greatly increase the amount of copper in the house wiring.

Fire risk still depends on the power to the outlet. If the outlet needed 120 watts = 120V at 1 amp or 12V at 10 amps, an arc fault would still dissipate the same amount of power.

But the amount of copper needed is the real problem. In other parts of the world with 230 or 240VAC, the wiring can be thinner while carrying the same power.

With no justification. The 18650 cells have better than “250-500 duty cycles” and do not “loose [sic] 10% range” due to use for V2G. V2G is a process where the grid has some control over the vehicle charging. If the grid is experiencing excessive load, it can **first** shed load by interrupting many cars charging. **If** this is not effective enough, then the grid can discharge some vehicles to supply the load. And this doesn’t last long, only enough to cover peaks, and then falling back to interrupted discharging, which costs nothing. Since discharging into the grid costs utilities money, they use it sparingly.

Also the software, such as Autobidder knows about the state and number of duty cycles used in every vehicle battery, it can use that to make the decisions by which vehicles are interrupted and which are discharging. If the same chemistry is used in 18650 and 4680 cells, the size of the cell should not have an effect on the number of discharges; i.e. its capacity.

2021-07-16 Autonomous Ride Hailing Will End Mass Transportation

I read that Orange County Transportation Authority will begin construction of street car tracks in downtown Santa Ana beginning this month.

I have been seeing that researchers predict that in the near future, using Artificial intelligence, cars will become smart enough to drive themselves autonomously. Then the ride hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft will offer autonomous ride hailing at much cheaper rates.

There will be major changes to the way people live. Today, a car gets driven to somewhere and the person leaves the car parked for 95% of the time while he/she is home or at work. With autonomous driving, the car can leave the parking lot and go pick up and deliver a passenger on its own. Or it could go to the store, bags of items will be put in, and it can take them to a home to be received by a consumer.

Because autonomous vehicles can go anywhere without a driver, the commuter can hail a ride just like Uber of Lyft, the commuter will not need to own a car — millions of cars will be available for ride hailing.

😧Do you have any concept of how big a 100 GW wind and solar farm is? That’s ginormous!

100 000 000 000 / 1000 * 4 equals

400 000 000 solar panels! 😱😱😱

Or 100 000 000 000 / 2 000 000 per turbine equals 50 000 wind turbines!

Okay let’s say 200 million solar panels and 25 thousand wind turbines!

Those are too much to comprehend! Just building a 1 GW solar and wind farm is a very large project. W.A. wants to build 100 of them!

They will have to have the solar panel and wind turbine makers build not just one, but a whole bunch of manufacturing plants right there, in Western Australia. If they don’t build more plants, this single project will vacuum up all the solar panels that are being built for years! Same thing for the wind turbines!

One thing I’m very sure of: it’s going to take more than ten years to build this huge of a project!

2021-07-15 Do EVs use Less Electricity Than Gasoline Cars?

The author seems to have left out all the other power uses of petroleum products. One is the additives that are required. Another might be the power to store, transport and sell the crude and refined products.

But did they take into account that the gasoline is burned and only about 25% gets to the wheels. Most of the heat goes into the atmosphere as wasted heat.

Here is another link that’s a few years old that says EVs make half as much greenhouse gases, cradle to grave. But this assumes that the EV is charged from the grid that still generates most of the electricity using coal. This was true back then but not as many coal plants are in use today; there have been hundreds that have been shut down in the US. In Texas, where Big Oil was king, there are so many wind turbines that have been installed that if Texas was its own country, it would be sixth in the world in the amount of wind power! Texas has 30 Gigawatts of wind turbines! That’s the same as 30 full-size coal power plants!

2021-07-14 Climate Change Demands No Business Model!

I was reading Bill Gates’ article about jet fuel should be like microwave ovens:

He said that “If we are going to get to zero emissions by 2050, we need a business model that will eliminate the Green Premium.” Or similar words to that effect.

What he is saying is that the world must use Wright’s Law to cause efficiencies of production to bring down the costs of renewables to eliminate the ‘Green Premium.’

And then I recalled that Mr. Gates, living in the Pacific Northwest, should be acutely aware of the heat dome that has broken temperature records all over where he lives. This has shown that climate change is not waiting for 2050, or even 2035. Climate change is here now. It must be dealt with immediately!

His idea of using Wright’s Law with a business model that eliminates the green premium over time will take too long. We need much more than this. We need laws like the light bulb laws that outlawed using incandescent lights. Any objections to these laws must be eliminated and they must take action quickly.

We need tariffs on fossil fuels or anything else that must be replaced due to using fossil fuels. In other words, the stove or other appliance that uses natural gas must be tariffed and the tariffs used to produce a substitute.

The chemicals that are currently produced using fossil fuels must be tariffed and the tariffs must be used to produce substitutes using renewables. One major use of fossil fuels is fertilizer, which must be made from renewables such as green hydrogen.

TARIFFS

The tariff must work both ways. Tariffs have been used to being the cost of foreign goods up to the price of domestic goods, with the fees going to the government. Instead, the tariff fee must be equal to half of the difference between the foreign and domestic goods. The fee must then be used to bring the cost of the domestic goods down to equal the cost plus tariff of the foreign goods.

We must immediately take action to get to zero CO2 emissions. 2035 will be too late!
