2021-07-22 Small VAWTs Outperform Big HAWTs

Their interfering turbulences multiply their effect 3 to 4 times. And they kill no birds. This article is more than 5 years old. Nothing has occurred.

2021-07-22 Italian Studies On Flexible Renewables + Storage

Important Info

What really angers me is the cynical propaganda that has been spread by the fossil fuel proponents that the electrical grid can’t be stable without “base load” from thermal power plants. This lie must be buried as soon as possible by research studies and as much proof as possible by real world experience. As an alternative the base load can and should be hydroelectric power from dams.

This article says curtailment, but this word implies that as solar is curtailed, the power is forever lost and will cost companies by reducing the plant capacity factor. The plants are financed on the ability of the owner to have a capacity factor that will enable the plant to pay for itself. This curtailment discourages financing. In order to prevent curtailment the renewable power should be required to generate green hydrogen instead of curtailment. This can be stored and used to generate power at night, or sold.

https://www.pv-magazine.com/2021/07/20/storage-curtailment-could-support-130-gw-of-pv-in-italy-by-2060/

<< …the researchers note that the PV plants should all be equipped with battery energy storage systems (BESS) and should be optimally oversized. They claim that their proposed baseline scenario would also bring down electricity costs without having any major environmental impact on agricultural land.

They said a storage/curtailment strategy could allow solar to “meet any load profiles as reliably as the thermoelectric plants used today,” with existing technologies (BESS, smart inverters, and remote control) and without a change in electrical grid architecture. The only condition would be that BESS/smart inverter-equipped PV plants should be centrally controlled by the country’s grid operator and managed by power distributors or aggregators. >>

<< Their 2060 scenario would require flexible PV plants to cover a maximum of 0.85% of Italy’s land surface. By 2060, they expect that utility-scale PV and batteries should cost no more than €350 per megawatt and €90 per kilowatt-hour. >>

2021-07-21 Renewables – The 2nd Wave: Elon’s Grand Scheme

Here’s the Big Quote:

<< The second wave of renewables is here. What did we learn with the first?
By Ted Page -7.14.2021

Here is THE BIG QUOTE:

<< Companies can accelerate their success today by demonstrating that their technology is part of a larger, more integrated and inspiring solution.

Everyone fawns over Elon Musk and Tesla. But why? Tesla makes very cool cars, but so do other manufacturers these days.

Elon Musk stands out because he never says he’s in the car business; he’s in the business of sustainable transportation. But his real vision is actually much larger than that. Musk has painted a vivid picture with multiple pieces that fit together to make something far greater than the sum of its parts. His solar panels generate clean power. His batteries store it. His vehicles run on it.

But wait, there’s more! Musk believes humanity is destined to be an interplanetary species, with SpaceX ready to take us to new worlds.

Translation: Little companies like Ford sell cars. Elon Musk has a whole system that’s interconnected in a beautiful way. We’re buying a story that’s orchestral in nature, not a lone piccolo piping about renewables, but the Beethoven’s 9th of modern industry.

Another important point:

WITHIN FIVE SECONDS OF LOOKING AT YOUR WEBSITE, A CUSTOMER SHOULD KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WHY THEY SHOULD CARE. ANYTHING ELSE IS EXTRANEOUS.

Another:

<< The mantra should be “under promise, over deliver.” If you’re launching God’s gift to clean energy, don’t talk about it. Show me. >>

2021-07-21 Myth: EVs Pollute More Than ICEVs

There are lying trolls who spew their anti-EV hatred over the social media, and they’re stupid for claiming the ‘dirty grid’ makes the EVs pollute. That’s absurd to blame EVs for something they have no control over, and that’s not their fault. But these are myths; EVs don’t pollute as much as ICEVs – cars that use gasoline.

2021-07-21 Waiting lines at Superchargers

Peter Shieh
That should be monitored by Tesla through the usage data. When there is high usage, they should add more Supercharger stations. If the usage is seasonal, they should deploy a portable Supercharger station.

Tesla has adapters that allow it to use charging facilities other than Tesla’s. One example is using RV parks with a 50 amp outlet for the RV. Much of the “overloaded chargers” could be solved if the customers just took advantage of the alternatives.

Tesla and other companies should get together and apply for a government grant to buy up strategically located properties where they can install a cluster of various chargers.

2021-07-20 Why Do So Many Require A College Degree?

This is from an opinion article in the Washington Post. I don’t even have to read the article to give an answer that refutes this claim.

It’s simply because employers add “or equivalent” to the requirement. Or it might say “or # years experience in..” and give the title of the job, such as accountant. It’s not that employers require a college degree, it’s that the employers require that the employment bar must be set high enough so their staff can screen possibly dozens of applicants and narrow the choices down to a few to interview. And they give themselves some room for discretion so they can choose the intern that has been working at the company for three summers in training to be an accountant while taking classes but not yet graduated with her degree. They have to open the job to applicants even though they’re pretty sure that the 3rd year intern will be chosen for the job. But they might choose another applicant with the degree, knowing that the third year intern will have her degree next year and be back as a full-time employee when Jane Doe retires next year. Perfect timing. 😉

2021-07-19 Carbon Capture And Sequestration, DAC

This long article is about carbon capture and sequestration with a section on DAC direct air capture. We must reduce the 410 parts per million in our atmosphere!

Quote:

<< Lackner says DAC is a good fit with renewable energy. If a natural gas power plant is off because of low demand, so is any point-source carbon-capture device attached to it. DAC, on the other hand, can run on renewable energy and stabilize electricity prices by being a customer of last resort. >>

But this quote concerns me.

<< “The reality is, we’ve only got a certain amount of time left,” the GCCSI’s Steyn says. “We’re now pushing against the clock.” Considering how long it takes to finance, engineer, and build a trillion dollars of industrial equipment, he says, “If you’re going to actually make inroads toward net-zero 2050, it’s got to happen this decade. This is the make-or-break decade.” >>

2021-07-18 Fake Trump Cancelled

Trump using traditional media now that he has been banned from social media.

https://www.politifact.com/article/2021/jul/14/suspended-social-media-donald-trump-turns-traditio/

The thought occurred to me that Trump has been trying to push the false narrative as far as possible to see how far he can go with his cult of Trump followers and right wing extremism.
