2021-05-11 Power Supply Protection Diodes

First off, *all* power supplies should have what this one has.

A high current diode across the output jacks, cathode or banded end to positive. This is to protect the output from reverse voltage.

A high current diode across the 2N3055 pass transistor, cathode or banded end towards the collector. This protects the transistor from reverse voltage.

Both these diodes must be rated at more than the power supply’s maximum current.

Notice the output jacks have a capacitor across them. This should also have a 0.1 uF ceramic disk in parallel.

2021-05-10 Power Lines For Data Communication

In the late ’60s a high school friend and I worked part-time with a guy who did FCC type acceptance and other radio engineering. He bought used Hewlett-Packard, Tektronix and other high quality test equipment. One was a frequency standard which was directly traceable to the National Bureau Of Standards, now known as NIST. He checked frequency counters using the 10 MHz WWV stations. He also checked frequency counters against some AM broadcasting stations. One was an AM station in San Francisco, which can be heard in LA at night. He noticed that the frequency, which is supposed to be kept within a close tolerance, was changing periodically but still within tolerance. It seemed to be transmitting frequency shift keyed code. He asked the station engineer but was given no information other than it was secret. He came to the conclusion that the military was probably using it to send encrypted messages to submarines at sea.

The point is that it’s possible to use radio transmitter for something other than its intended purpose. So I thought about this idea.

The electric companies have some frequencies (VHF or ??) assigned to them for sending control signals between stations and equipment in the field. The big trend now is the IoT – internet of things. Residences are becoming more automated. If the electric companies have a need to control loads or generation sources on the grid, it would be very helpful if the slaves could be controlled remotely over the power lines.

The smart gas and electric meters are controlled over a Zigbee mesh network. The messages are stored and forwarded by a peer-to-peer network. I assume that this means there is no ability to control the amount of delay between the sender node and the receiver node since the number of hops and delays between hops is not known. This wouldn’t be a problem if the messages were sent directly over the power lines.

2021-05-08 Climate Change And The Future

From FB replies

Darryl Howard
Said, “…time will tell. I doubt anything happens here in the next 100 years…”

I saw that in Canada, in a national park, the pine trees are dying. The bark beetles burrow in and eat the living tissues. Normally in the past it got down to minus 40 degrees for several days and that was cold enough to kill the beetles. But climate change is causing the winter temperatures to not get quite as cold and the beetles survive. They showed the forest full of brown trees. They said half of the trees are dying or dead. The next lightning from a thunderstorm that starts a fire will create a huge wildfire.

I look at it this way. If I’m wrong and the climate change is not real, the countries will have spent a lot of money for possibly nothing. But if we fail to act now to reverse climate change, then when we find that it gets really bad, there will be no second chance to apologize and say we had better get busy and stop climate change. Once it gets bad enough to make everyone believe, it’s far too late. Most likely those with beachfront property, like in Miami will find their property partially underwater. But the biggest losers will be the poorest countries where the people will become climate refugees. This climate change in central America is causing the refugees to come north and become illegals here. But it’s going to get far worse. It’s going to cause droughts that will make irrigating farmland difficult if not impossible. The livestock that eat a lot of food and water will have to be sacrificed to save the food for humans.

My sister was a born again Christian and I lost her to cancer a week ago. She and I grew up in a Christian family, but she got involved with the crowd that did drugs. I hesitate to call myself a Christian anymore because I saw what a lot of two faced Christians were like. I’ve had cancer, too so I figure I don’t have that much longer on this Earth. But while I do, I want to make sure the future generations have an Earth that’s not unlivable. Others also have the best interests of the Earth in mind. The best scientists we have say that the climate is changing, and they show many other examples to prove it.

In the next decade the world will be making major changes in the way we live. Everyone will have to make some sacrifices, in order to keep the Earth halfway livable. There is no other choice.

I have read the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, took me a year and a half. That’s more than you can say.

Climate change doesn’t have to be human caused. But the climate is changing rapidly. You can believe what you want. But you’ll be left to your foolishness while the younger generations have to put up with the damage that’s already being caused by climate change. I won’t be around to have any regrets. I’ll be another viet nam era veteran buried in the national cemetery while you and other foolish people argue over who gets the life preservers as the ship is sinking.

Bon voyage, sucker!

2021-05-08 Cryptocurrency Facts

From a thread on FB group TSLA shareholders asking who holds cryptocurrencies.

Poker champions do a lot of due diligence. But they are still gambling. You only win what others lose. Zero sum.

Owning a stock is different because the underlying company produces a product and hopefully eventually earns a profit. >>

2021-05-08 Methane, Fossil Fuels In Livestock And Dairy Farming

From FB reply

I’ve read there is research about feeding seaweed to livestock to reduce methane.

The livestock industry has had manure digesters that produce enough power to run the dairy farms, and this is a mature technology. They could also run the farm equipment using compressed methane AKA natural gas.

In any case the objective is to end the use of fossil fuels for livestock and dairy farming. The use of biofuels is a mature technology; the use of used cooking oil for diesel engines has been around for quite awhile. Most people don’t know that Diesel himself built his engine to run on vegetable oil.

2021-05-08 Myth: Solar Panels Generate Mountains Of Waste And Heat The Planet

This anti-solar PV article has some serious flaws. The commenter challenged me by asking “Do solar panels reflect heat?” I answered “No, solar panels do not reflect heat.” He then replied with this article.

This article claims that solar farms cause a heat island that’s hotter than the surrounding area. If the land is bright white sand and the solar panels are dark then the solar panels will absorb more sunlight than the surrounding area. If the surrounding land is as dark and absorbs as much sunlight as the solar panels then no change would happen. So it depends on the surrounding land.

Solar panels are 95% recycled so there are no “mountains of waste.”

2021-05-07 Republican Party Of Lies

Capehart said the many restrictive state voter bills were a solution looking for a problem. He received comments that from the Republicans’ perspective, the restrictive voter bills were a solution to a problem. And that problem is there are too many Democrats voting. 😱😱😱

The Liz Cheney issue is also discussed. She is being removed from her assignment by the Republicans because she refuses to lie and go along with the rest of the Republicans who support Trump’s false election fraud allegations.

Excellent commentaries from both Brooks and Capehart.

2021-05-07 Relithiation To Make Old Batteries Like New

If the old cells were made easier to take apart and reassemble it would be helpful.

I think that someday the battery makers may do what Eagle Picher did for batteries on spacecraft. There is a container of electrolyte inside the battery. To activate the battery a small charge blows the electrolyte out of the container and into the cell, thus beginning the production of power. But instead of activation, the cell would be reactivated to nearly double its lifetime. It might be possible to add a third or fourth reactivation.

2021-05-07 Tesla Full Self Driving Later

The AI or machine learning or whatever has to be trained and that’s based on accumulated miles / kilometers. If the training is in its early stages then it stands to reason that it’s capable of only lower level 2. I thought that’s what the Dojo project was supposed to do, but what has that contributed to the FSD so far?

AI can’t make reasoned decisions. It has to learn from experience. On Youtube I watched an AI program train a car to park in a parking space. By a few tens of thousands of attempts it was beginning to learn to not run into everything. By 300 to 500 thousand attempts it was finally getting somewhat competent at making it into the parking space. Judging by that, it’s going to need a lot of training to not act like a bull in a china shop.
