2021-05-21 Green Hydrogen And 100% Renewables Plus Storage

The halting of climate change requires that fossil fuels be replaced; the CO2 must be stopped from entering the atmosphere. The consensus is to build wind and solar farms to generate electricity instead of using fossil fuels.

Since renewables are intermittent, there must be some way to store and supply electricity when renewables are not able to. The real capacity of wind and solar farms is less than 50%, typically somewhere around 30%. So during the daylight hours the amount of solar power has to be at least 3 times more than the daily needs so that 2/3 of the power can be stored for use during nighttime.

At this time (2021 May) there are several pumped hydro “water batteries” in the USA. There are a growing number of utility scale BESS – battery energy storage systems in the USA. Other forms of energy storage are being developed. One promising energy storage is to generate green hydrogen for use later.

Most of the pro’s and con’s of hydrogen are stated in another of my blogs. The one that I must explain is as follows.

Hydrogen

As I said, the renewables must be able to supply 3 or more times as much electricity as needed for the peak load. This is to allow enough power for when the sky is cloudy or during winter when days are shorter. This also applies to wind since there are times when there is no wind.

The result is that excess electricity will be generated and this must be stored for use at night or cloudy or windless days. The storage may need to be for longer than a few days, because of weather or seasonal periods of low light.

It’s not practical to spend huge amounts on adding excessive BESS – battery energy storage systems to the grid. One alternative is to use redox flow batteries. These batteries have capacities that are only limited by the size of storage tanks for the fluids. But it’s possible to generate hydrogen from the excess electricity.

Hydrogen can be stored in underground salt caverns just as natural gas (methane) is stored today. Enormous amounts can be stored. Another way to store hydrogen is to combine it with nitrogen from air, to make ammonia. This ammonia is already being made, stored and transported all over for use as fertilizer. It can be converted back to hydrogen with nitrogen as the byproduct, which is benign – the same as 79% of air.

This ‘excess’ hydrogen is being generated by the electricity of excess capacity, which is necessary but would otherwise be wasted (curtailed). The hydrogen should be viewed as an insurance policy or backup against the times when renewables are at a minimum. We humans can’t predict events, such as bad weather, that might cause a shortage of renewable electricity. So we have to have a backup that can supply power for a few days while the adverse weather or event passes. The backup may also be needed when the peak demand grows faster than renewables plus storage are being added. It’s likely that climate change will cause weather extremes that can’t be anticipated. This will be the times when stored hydrogen will be needed.

The amount of stored hydrogen has many uses other than for generating electricity. Large amounts of hydrogen can be used to make fertilizer. The hydrogen can be used to fuel ships, airplanes, trains or heavy trucks.

But one of the biggest uses of hydrogen will be to make synfuels such as diesel or gasoline AKA petrol. These fuels will be totally green – they will not be made from fossil fuels such as oil.

Hopefully in the next dozen years almost all of the fossil fueled ICEVs will be replaced by electric vehicles. But there will still be some transportation that needs a fuel with more energy per kg than hydrogen. The airplanes are one example, where batteries are too heavy at this time. Plus using hydrogen to make synfuel allows CO2 to be removed from the atmosphere.

2021-05-21 Hydrogen Is Inefficient??

You failed to state the obvious. Hydrogen, despite its inefficiencies, is more efficient in FCEVs than fossil fuel in ICEVs. And its distinct advantage for heavy transportation is the refueling time can be the same as fossil fuels. See charts below.

It’s obvious that your claim is being ignored by the companies that are important. If you were to talk to those tens of thousands of decision makers who decided to choose hydrogen and tell them that, they would say “who the hell do you think you are?” and proceed to laugh at you!!

You badmouth hydrogen, but offer *nothing* that can replace it in some cases. This is the problem with you, Musk and other armchair experts.

I know what the pro’s and con’s of hydrogen are. In detail. Do you?

Do you know why the car makers decided to use hydrogen? Yes or no.

The metrics behind hydrogen are discussed in this YouTube video by Engineering with Rosie. They talk about the hydrogen energy per kg versus energy per cubic meter. Therein lies part of the problem. That’s why hydrogen is stored in cylinders at extremely high pressure — 10,000 PSI or 700 BAR for vehicles. For fixed storage it’s not necessary to have such small storage cylinders at such high pressure so pressure can be lower.

That hasn’t prevented the HFCVs from filling the tank with sufficient fuel to get adequate range ~~300 miles.

2.) Fuel cells operate at higher temperatures.

So do ICEVs. That hasn’t prevented ICEs from serving for more than 100 years.

3.) Still need batteries.

Or some form of kinetic energy recovery. It could be supercapacitors, but in any case the batteries are a fraction of BEV size.

4.) H2 is very difficult to contain and transport.

That is not entirely true. H2 is made and then liquified or compressed and transported all around the US using heavy trucking or high pressure pipelines.

6.) No infrastructure.

There is already a very large amount of infrastructure for making, transporting and handling H2 for production of ammonia for fertilizer.

There is *no* need to transport H2 to the fueling station. All H2 can be generated on site; the only raw materials needed are water and electricity.

The H2 refueling infrastructure is being partly financed by the government in California. There are 45 H2 fuel stations with more being built.

7.) The H2 pumps are expensive.

The prices of Lithium-ion batteries were expensive a few decades ago but the prices have fallen dramatically. Attribute this to Wright’s Law.

5.) H2 is currently refined from natural gas.

It’s a fully mature process and has been available for many decades, but will have to be changed to electrolysis as soon as possible to eliminate fossil fuels.

Hydrogen advantages

Hydrogen requires only electricity and water for consumables. It doesn’t require expensive metals such as lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel. The hydrogen electrolyzer requires metals and membranes but nothing high tech. This technology has been used for more than a hundred years. High pressure pumps are needed to store the hydrogen in high pressure cylinders. All this can be done at the fueling station location.

I don’t support unions, but I won’t stand for blaming the wrong group for the social problems of a large city.

This goes far, far past what the unions do. The car companies have been corporately irresponsible, especially GM. That’s why they have had to be rescued from bankruptcy.

The unions were a symptom of dysfunctional corporations that *caused* their workers to unionize. If the corporations had treated the workers fairly there would not have been a reason to unionize.

You blame the people for rising up against unfair labor practices, instead of blaming the unfair labor practices themselves. Does that make any sense?

Socialism has nothing to do with corporations that treat their workers as slaves. It looks to me and all the others reading this that you are the one with the problem sorting out what’s right and wrong. You are the one who has a twisted view of reality.

2021-05-19 Hydrogen Must Be Fossil Fuel Free ASAP

The third most important thing (after air and water) is food, and agriculture uses huge amounts of hydrogen in making fertilizer. Now, the hydrogen is made using fossil fuels, mostly methane, and the fossil fuels must be eliminated ASAP. The hydrogen must be made by other than fossil fuels and the governments must force this to happen, by carbon taxes or by laws.

Rosie spoke a lot about the economics, but the “green premium”, the additional cost of going green, must be dealt with by governments. The economics will come as various methods are developed to solve the needs for hydrogen *without* generating CO2.

There is no time for ruminating about this. It must be done at all costs and the details will be worked out as it’s done. There is no argument among scientists about this; we have to get the ball rolling immediately.

2021-05-19 Renewables Plus Storage Are Outcompeting Conventional Power

I forgot to mention PPAs. The utilities are entering into power purchase agreements with solar and wind contractors for per kWh rates that are lower than conventional thermal power plants. These often include short term 4 to 8 hour storage. Any new generation has to compete against renewables plus storage for these PPAs. And the costs of renewables plus storage is still going down so the competition is getting tougher.

Here is an article with some good links. One thing they make clear is that the world has *not* got the time to wait multiple years for new technologies to be approved. And it’s going to cost a lot to get the ball rolling.

2021-05-18 Hydrogen Replacing Methane Pros, Cons

This Youtube video Engineering With Rosie interviews a chemical engineer who talks about the problems of replacing some or all of the natural gas with hydrogen. Hydrogen has higher energy per unit weight, but it is much less dense than methane so it has much less energy per unit volume.

The natural gas system has a large amount of leakage. Half is in production and the other half is leakage in distribution. Hydrogen has a smaller molecule and leaks even easier than methane.

After the 11 minute point he has some important things to say about the need for eliminating CO2 from the atmosphere.
