2022-02-25 SMR “Too Late, Too Risky” – Report

A quote from this IEEFA report: << The small modular reactor (SMR) that Oregon-based NuScale Power has been developing since the turn of the century is “too late, too expensive, too risky, and too uncertain,” according to an analysis conducted by an American think tank that recommends the project be abandoned. Best estimates are that

2022-02-19 Calif Utilities Must Procure 40+GW Clean Energy By 2032

California lowers electric sector GHG target, directs procurement of more than 40 GW of clean energy resources The chart with the yearly figures shows 40.55 GW total must be procured by 2032. The utilities must procure 25GW clean energy generation and 15GW storage, while meeting strict reliability standards. Some of this will be pumped hydro.

2022-02-10 NEM3.0 Halted By CPUC

The California PUC has halted NEM3.0, which would have reduced the amount per kWh that customers with solar get when they sell their power back to the grid. NEM3.0 would discourage future solar customers from getting solar. The utilities are claiming that the money that is saved by solar customers is costing the non-solar customers

2022-01-22 LED Xmas Light String Repair

A string of LED xmas lights had been fritzing on and off, then it finally failed. I had to pull out 4 lights before I found two that were dead. I had to file off the ridge around the base to get them to fit properly into the base. So it’s back working again. It

2022-01-20 Pumped Hydro For Long Energy Storage

They say the problem with battery energy storage is that they say it’s not long-term; for renewables we need long-term energy storage. Pumped hydro has been used for a hundred years. Nothing high tech or no scalability issues. Just dig two lakes, one above the other, with pumps and generators between them. The costs may

2022-01-18 Florida: Rooftop Solar Bill & Net Metering

The Utilities are complaining about net metering, that the rooftop solar owners are getting back too much money so the non-solar customers must be charged more to make up for the utilities’ losses. They say this is unfair to non-solar customers. To me, this looks like the utilities have a flawed business model. They should

2022-01-13 DOE Upgrade To Electric Grid

They say this is big news. We *need* to have many interconnections between the Eastern and Western power grids. And Texas, too if they had common sense. Several DC interties need to be built so the west can send electricity to the east during daytime. https://electrek.co/2022/01/13/the-big-upgrade-to-the-us-power-grid-is-kicking-off/

2022-01-05 Electric Dryer And 240 VAC Line

From my reply in FB group I Take Pictures… Steve Spence Said, “your electric stove, water heater, and dryer use the full 240.” I don’t *have* any of those appliances; they’re all natural gas. My coworker asked me to fix her electric dryer that she had just had installed. She said the dryer ran but
