2022-02-19 Calif Utilities Must Procure 40+GW Clean Energy By 2032

California lowers electric sector GHG target, directs procurement of more than 40 GW of clean energy resources

The chart with the yearly figures shows 40.55 GW total must be procured by 2032.

The utilities must procure 25GW clean energy generation and 15GW storage, while meeting strict reliability standards. Some of this will be pumped hydro.

Quote << The commission’s preliminary analysis of the preferred system plan portfolio also “indicates there is sufficient space for all of these new resources on the existing transmission system, with only limited transmission upgrades needed by 2032,” the CPUC said in a statement. >>

This implies (in my opinion) that there will be community solar generation and storage that will relieve much of the additional load on the transmission system. This could be storage on a medium scale and behind the meter storage.

<< The stricter GHG planning target equates to 73% renewable portfolio standard resources and 86% greenhouse gas-free resources by 2032, according to the CPUC. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) said it supported the CPUC’s decision, but added that “more aggressive decarbonization will still be necessary for the state to achieve its climate goals.” >>
