2021-02-20 Gates Says This Will Be Hard

Climate Change Energy Environment Politics

Ch. “This will be hard” p.51

<< To sum up: We need to accomplish something gigantic we have never done before, much faster than we have ever done anything similar. To do it, we need lots of breakthroughs in science and engineering. We need to build a consensus that doesn’t exist and create public policies to push a transition that would not happen otherwise. We need the energy system to stop doing all the things we don’t like and keep doing all the things we do like — in other words, to change completely and also stay the same.

But don’t despair. We can do this. There are lots of ideas out there for how to do it, some of them more promising than others. In the next chapter, I’ll explain how I try to tell them apart. >>

2021-02-20 Making The Tools To Combat Climate Change

Battery or Cell Climate Change Renewable Energy
on February 20th, 2021 by admin - No Comments

I read a lot of criticisms from doom and gloom climate change deniers who say that the wind turbines and solar arrays are polluting the Earth and blah-blah-blah. They have a hypercritical viewpoint of what is needed to get to zero carbon energy.

I think this concept never occurred to them. The craftsman needs to build a machine to make his new invention, the screw. But he doesn’t have screws to build the machines, obviously. So he must use the fasteners that he does have, rivets or pins or nails or dowels. These allow him to get to the objective of making screws, so the next generation of machines will be using screws.

The same applies to making fossil fuel-free energy. The tools available are not fossil fuel-free, but they are building the machines that make fossil fuel-free energy, until all the fossil fueled sources have been replaced. This will take years, but it must be done. The critics have to stop complaining and instead make sure that the makers of the fossil fuel-free machines give the highest priority to the machines that are replacing fossil fueled machines. These are the root of the greenhouse gas production and must be made fossil fuel-free before anything else.

2021-02-20 Bill Gates Attacked By Self-righteous Hypocrites

From reply in FB group Scientists Warning

AD Mitchell
Said about Bill Gates “There’s some good info…” and “… a billionaire can buy the eyes and ears of millions of people, so it’s good to know what he is saying.”

At least AD has a bit of common sense. Bill Gates is telling “How To Avoid A Climate Disaster” in his book of that name. So why is he being attacked for trying to help?

There are these other nasty critics who attack Gates for being wealthy (which he admits to being). They say hypocritical things about this philanthropist who has done thousands of times more to stop climate change than these critics have done. Gates has been conscientious, which I doubt any of these self-righteous critics have been.

******

Jennifer Mary Tess
Said, “…listen to some person who happens to be good at making money and crushing his competition unfairly than actual climate scientists.”

I think you are misinformed. Gates doesn’t have an active role in Microsoft. I agree that Microsoft doesn’t have the goodest reputation, but your hatred is one of the reasons why the planet is on the brink of disaster. This former head of Microsoft has become enlightened and informed and is trying to save the planet. As you said,
“Perhaps your values need some thought.”

2021-02-19 The Mars Rover’s Photos Should Be Live

Jerry Savage
Said, [the Perseverance rover’s cameras] should all be live.”
Well, good luck to you! You’ll be sitting on your butt for the rest of the day waiting for the photos to come onto the screen, pixel by pixel, line by line, until the screen finally fills up. The rover is many tens of millions of miles away on another planet, and the signal is so weak that there are only a few places on earth that have a large enough dish antenna to receive such a weak signal. Then after receiving it, there may be parts of the signal that had errors and those have to be fixed or resent. Then the photo may have to be processed to extract the relevant data. Like your eyes can’t see UV or IR so the photo only needs to show visible light.

So sit down and take a load off your mind. Your impatience will just have to fester and be a pain to you while the magicians at NASA JPL do their magic.

2021-02-18 Q: Is 100% solar wind and batteries (or storage) possible by 2030?

Q: “Is 100% solar wind and batteries (or storage) possible by 2030?”

A: Not possible if left to the IOUs (investor owned utilities). They are regulated and if left to their own choices they will do exactly what they did in Texas — they will do the minimum necessary to maximize profits while charging the least for the service.

The federal government must take control of the decision making with regard to the national generation capabilities. The amount of power that renewables generate and store must be 4 or more times the total needed for serving the consumers. There must be enough to supply peak loads, while using the excess to generate hydrogen and store enough to supply the load for a few days of minimum sunshine and wind. All transportation must be electrified or use green hydrogen so the grid must be capable of supplying that load, also. The IOUs have no incentive to take that much risk so laws must be passed that mandate the change to renewables plus storage.

They say the problem is ‘range anxiety.’ The batteries can charge 100 miles in 5 minutes. This is one of Hashem’s videos. The references are in the pinned comment.

2021-02-18 Bill Gates “How To Avoid A Climate Disaster”

on February 18th, 2021 by admin - No Comments

From FB reply

“Stephen Hymowitz
I ordered Gates’s book; I’ll be reading it soon.

I agree with the production and storing of green hydrogen. GE is modifying their gas turbines to run on hydrogen. Toyota, Hyundai and Honda sell hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. There are plans to run ICE vehicles using green hydrogen. Hydrogen is lighter than batteries and good for heavy transportation like ships, trains and airplanes. California is investing in hydrogen refueling stations – 46 so far with more being built.

Gates is well informed, and has the resources and is willing to combat climate change. That’s much more than almost everyone else except for governments. Gates is aware of the problems with nuclear power plants. NPPs in my opinion are not the answer because they are too expensive – 10s of billions – and take a decade to bring online. Utilities are seeing that renewables plus storage are cheaper per kWh and the prices continue to decrease. Doesn’t matter what Gates or we believe about NPPs; the utilities make the decisions and they’re going for renewables plus storage, not NPPs.

2021-02-17 Richest Countries Should Eat Synthetic Beef

Uncategorized

Bill Gates says the richest countries should switch to synthetic beef. 75% of the land used for agriculture is used for livestock. It takes 1750 liters of water for each hamburger.
