Well, this article wants the Flunked Clown College to let DRM be one of the choices. It doesn’t matter to me because I don’t plan on spending anything on getting a device that will decode HD radio, FM or AM. Even if the next car I buy has it, I will still not be using it.
My post was meant to find out what others think about losing the Analog AM signal. I sometimes listen to a single AM station, CBS’s KNX 1070 all news all the time. It really doesn’t matter much to me if AM loses the analog signal. If I want to listen to an AM signal, I’ll turn on my AM transmitter.
And I should’ve said the height of the antenna makes a big difference on signal strength too. Here in LaLa Land, the antennas for most of the TV stations and FM stations are on Mt Wilson, up a mile above the cities. The wildfires burned right up to the locations of the towers and the Mt Wilson Observatory. It could’ve knocked out over the air broadcasting for ten million people.
I’ve seen so many locations in Southern California that are pretty much barren mostly because the country is lacking water. The cost of water in So. Cal. is high because there are so many people that the water they need has to be imported from hundreds of miles away — as far as Northern California.
I thought that it would be really nice to drill a well to irrigate a plot of land to grow trees. The problem is how to drill a well deep enough to get fresh, unpolluted water. Does it cost a lot of money? Does it require the rights to the water under the property? Does it require many other legal things that make it really difficult or nearly impossible? Do you have to pay some agency for the right to use the water? And probably some other issues that must be dealt with.
I could collect rainwater for use later to irrigate. But it rains seldom and so little that it’s likely that that wouldn’t be enough. And when it rains I would have to store a large amount that would have to last a long time. This seems to be problematic and not practical. So I need a small stream of clean water that flows almost all the time, and with enough volume to water the property, maybe one acre to start.
I read about the farmers in a dry foreign country who put up fine nets of mesh that collect the dew at night, just like spider webs collect dew. It runs off and is collected for use. The air supplies enough moisture for their use. This seems like a great idea.
But I want to take it further than that. I thought that I could put up solar panels to supply enough electric power to take the moisture out of the air. I thought that running a refrigeration unit that cools a plate to collect ice, then it is thawed and the water runs off to be collected. The solar PV array could charge a sizeable capacity battery and then during the cool evening the battery would run the refrigeration unit to condense the water. The amount of water would be dependent on the moisture in the air. Some locations are in high humidity locations, so the system could generate a reasonable quantity of water.
Say the system could generate enough water to be a few GPM (gallons per minute) through a 3/4″ or 20mm PVC pipe. Would that be enough to water an acre of fruit trees during the summer? How much water does a single tree need to grow? There are lots of questions that have to be answered.

This is very good news. The $5 trillion asset owners are committing to divest of 29% of greenhouse gas polluters. The pressure is on corporations that don’t make changes to reduce their carbon footprint.
Ooh, this article is finally showing that the ones who are suffering are getting really serious. Those corporations who deny climate change are going to have to answer to the courts. We should hope and pray that the courts handle these types of cases as expeditiously as possible, because to delay would be extremely harmful to the planet as a whole.
Thanks to Big Tobacco companies fighting the courts, we now have a well-developed body of legal cases that the lawyers can use to prosecute the fossil fuel industry. We need this to speed up the prosecution.

From my message to moline
I joined the #StopHateForProfit boycott on July 1, and last week I found that it hasn’t done anything to persuade FB to stop the hate for profit. But I found that Congress is seriously considering investigating the internet giants including FB for antitrust and being monopolies. I think Amazon and maybe Google deserve it. But FB doesn’t sell commodities like Amazon. Still FB will have to change — they have had walkouts by their employees over these issues.
I have enjoyed the past three months a lot, I did a lot of reading and became much more aware of how bad things are regarding climate change. The Thwaites ice shelf in Antarctica is the size of Florida, and warmer sea water is undermining it from below. If it breaks away from Antarctica and melts it could cause the sea level to rise 2 feet. And it’s not the only ice shelf in Antarctica — the oceans could rise up to 2 meters or 6 feet. Those who live along the coast may have to move inland! Any time a storm or hurricane comes the low lying places like New Orleans or Miami may no longer be livable. This is something about which our government is in a state of denial. I have relatives who live a mile and a half from the beach. They’re completely in denial. They may need oars to get out of the house. Seriously!
What else is new? I’m not sure I want to be on FB before the election. Too many haters and fools out here. I’ve blocked so many that I have cut the amount of rubbish down to a small fraction. But for now FB will be on my phone. Temporarily.

This morning on CBS Sunday Morning they had an article about a farmer who couldn’t repair his $800,000 John Deere tractor and lost several days of work. There is a growing movement in the US to make laws that require manufacturers to allow their customers to repair the equipment they own. This is a backlash against manufacturers such as Apple who make it difficult for consumers to open up their devices to do something as simple as replace a battery.
One company rep said, “allowing the customers to repair would undermine the integrity of the equipment.”
What is absurdly ironic is that the unrepaired equipment has no ‘integrity’ whatsoever! It’s not working! So how could repair undermine something it doesn’t have? It has lost its integrity to a failure that should not have happened, typically caused by a defective component. One might say that the equipment should not be losing its integrity to begin with, therefore it’s the responsibility of the manufacturer to repair the defect. This is otherwise known as a warranty. It’s just longer than the customary one year.
Another irony is that as devices such as vehicles have become more technically sophisticated the manufacturers have added self-diagnostics to the device’s capabilities and an interface to allow the diagnostic tool to be connected to the device (like an OBD2 port on a car). So now that it’s easier for anyone to find a problem, the consumer is faced with more prohibitions by manufacturers on repairing what they own.
The manufacturers are realizing they are facing a turning point in the way consumers will have to treat the products they buy. The products have to no longer be treated as disposable. The product lifetimes will have to be longer than five years in order to reduce the amount of waste that is causing plastic pollution. And the batteries inside many products are valuable because of the high costs of their chemical ingredients, so they should be recycled.
The unfortunate reality is that the manufacture of these items takes a lot of energy. And the world must cut the amount of energy and hence the amount of fossil fuels that are being wasted as devices that can be repaired are replaced by a new device.
Another article on this Sunday Morning was an interview with Jon Bon Jovi. They played a bit of “You give love a bad name” and it instantly brought to my mind a phrase that I think applies to the pandemic: “You give life a bad name.”
After this, they had a piece on Q Anon. They said the House passed a resolution condemning Q Anon and 17 Republicans voted against it. Verrry strange.
