2022-01-13 DOE Upgrade To Electric Grid

They say this is big news. We *need* to have many interconnections between the Eastern and Western power grids. And Texas, too if they had common sense. Several DC interties need to be built so the west can send electricity to the east during daytime.

2022-01-13 Environmentally Friendly States, Least & Most

America’s least and most environmentally friendly states. The figures this article gives don’t make sense. For example, #32, New Jersey says the fossil fuels and renewables add up to 5% total. Where is the remaining 95% of the energy coming from? They say the figures come from the government – EIA. There seems to be a lot that they’re not telling us.

I don’t understand why they show #33 Texas as having only 1.2% renewables, and only 24% fossil fuels. Texas has a huge amount of wind turbines — over 30 GW! That’s equivalent to 30 full-size thermal power plants!

2022-01-12 Printer Ink Cartridges Are A Ripoff

From FB group

The article said DRM, but it didn’t make sense to me either. But what makes me wonder is why do they go to the trouble and expense to put a chip in the cartridge if it’s just a matter of accepting the prompt that appears??? What purpose does the chip serve?

The whole printer ink thing seems a bit absurd. I had only one color inkjet printer and hardly ever used it, because at that time, 20+ years ago a set of cartridges cost $75.00 and I thought that was outrageous.

Then I found out that the companies were selling each printer with less than full cartridges! That forced the customer into prematurely buying the expensive cartridges! I think it was the reason why so many went to Kinko’s to do their printing.

2022-01-12 Solar Thermal Generation Lab

Heliostats and solar thermal generation.

The advantage of storing the heat at night is not needed if the electricity is used to generate hydrogen, which serves the same purpose – storage. The real advantage is being able to deploy this system for cheaper than other solar electricity systems.

2022-01-11 McDonald’s Beef Hamburgers At Odds With Cutting Emissions

Hold the beef! McDonald’s is just one of many fast food chains that need to cut beef consumption. They should replace beef with more sustainable meat like chicken.

The article suggests McDonald’s is greenwashing.

Quote: << In recent years, the company announced big sustainability initiatives but climate experts who reviewed McDonald’s plans and data say the fast-food company is largely dodging the one bold step it must take to slash emissions: dramatically reducing the amount of beef it serves.

“The naked truth is McDonald’s is in a business that is fundamentally at odds with the Earth’s integrity,” said Gidon Eshel, … >>

<< And a recent study found the world’s food system accounts for about one-third of greenhouse gas emissions, with the beef industry comprising as much as 25% of that figure.

Beef is particularly problematic because cows release high levels of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, in their burps and manure. The amount of feed, water and land that cows require to produce a pound of meat is much higher than other animals, and that inflates their carbon footprint. Raising cows exacts a “multidimensional burden” on the Earth, Eshel said, because the industry also pollutes, consumes water and spurs deforestation. >>

2022-01-11 Accumulated Heat In Upper Oceans Is At Record Levels

Quote: << Ocean heat content is one of the best indicators of climate change.” said John Abraham, Professor of University of St. Thomas. During La Niña, the ocean actually takes up but buries extra heat below the surface.

“With model experiments, our study shows that the pattern of ocean warming is a result of human-related changes in atmospheric composition.” Cheng said. “As oceans warm, the water expands and sea level rises. Warmer oceans also supercharge weather systems, creating more powerful storms and hurricanes, as well as increasing precipitation and flood risk.” >>
