2021-11-05 High Gas Prices Blamed On OPEC, Russia

Higher gasoline prices blamed on OPEC & Russia. The higher gas prices are incentives for drivers to change to EVs. Instead of hundreds more, they could be saving hundreds in fuel costs.

https://www.politifact.com/article/2021/nov/04/why-are-oil-prices-so-high-and-what-can-be-done-ab/

<< “Higher prices at the pump matter,” Finley said. By his calculations, he said, just this year’s increases are costing each American household an additional $1,000.

So how do Russia and OPEC play into this? Together, they account for just over half of global production, so experts agree that they can do the most to increase supply, which would result in lower prices at the pump. >>

2021-11-04 Common Items Out Of Stock And Prices Higher

Guys are saying they have tried to get parts and have run into problems. The normally commonplace items are out of stock, and prices are up everywhere. Recently this happened with lumber.

I wonder if the human nature of hoarding has hit the commercial sector? It was toilet paper and cleaning supplies last year, so it could be the same phenomenon happening in industry.

But the game they’re most likely playing is they’re trying to corner the market for the critical items that they make or distribute. Then they pull the Big Pharma trick and triple the prices to gouge their customers.

Am I right??

2021-11-03 The Enigma Of Climate Inaction

https://youtu.be/WDWhjSUu8UY

This hour long video is summed up by the first slide,

<< Main messages

– It’s complicated!

– Humans really don’t understand human behaviour.

– How we ‘act out’ in life springs from a complex interplay of nature and nurture.

– From the perspective of the public good’, H. sapiens is not primarily a rational species.

– Public policy is strongly tainted by cognitive and behavioral traits that operate beneath consciousness. We cannot, by definition, be aware of them.

– These traits were advantageous earlier in human evolution, but have become dangerously maladaptive in the complex techno-industrial environment humans themselves have created.

– One result: Global society will miss the Paris climate accord target of limiting global warming to <1.5 C° (likely also <2.0 C°).

<< Our dominant social construct is a very bad map

Neoliberal economics, the entrenched economic narrative of modern techno-industrial (MTI) society, is simplistically reductionist. It contains no useful information about the ecological or social systems with which the economy interacts in the real world. Some crucial assumptions:

– the economy is separate from, and essentially independent, of the biophysical environment’.

– human ingenuity (efficiency and technology) can create substitutes for any potentially limiting natural resource.

– ethical and moral considerations are irrelevant to economic analysis; damage to ecosystems or communities are mere ‘externalities.’

2021-11-01 Highway Where Trucks Work Like Electric Trains

Tom Scott takes us on a ride on a heavy truck that uses the overhead electric wires for most of the distance on highways.

I remember when they converted from electric trolleys to electric buses in parts of Los Angeles. That was back in the ’50s and ’60s so this is not a new way of propulsion. It’s a good way to save a lot and eliminate fossil fuels from transportation.

NREL study said boosting transmission between the eastern and western grids would save money.

The dirty, rotten, evil Trump administration held up the NREL report because they thought it would harm the coal industry. They tried to kill the Earth with coal!
