2021-03-19 Thomas A. Edison’s Legacy

This was from a FB comment I made in Sept 2016.

Watson Fixer

There was nothing false about Edison’s legacy, unless you consider electrocuting elephants false. Many if not most of Edison’s ideas failed to become inventions. But his invention factory was so prolific that the successful inventions were large in number and importance.

In one of Edison’s experiments with the light bulb, he put a metal plate inside of the bulb. He found that the electric current could flow from the filament to the plate, but not from the plate to the filament. This thermionic emission (November 15, 1883, U.S. patent 307,031, the first US patent for an electronic device) became the basis for all of electronics for the first half of the 20th century. And if you don’t believe me, just go look up thermionic emission or the Edison Effect.

This thermionic emission is the grandfather of all modern electronics – everything.

2021-03-18 Stupid Versus Clueless

Ooooh! Them are fightin’ words!

I used to say that too, back when this same meme was a favorite on the Usenet newsgroups, the 1990s forerunner of Facebutt. But it got a lot of people riled up because we called them stupid.

Well, the geeks and nerds came with “haven’t got a clue.” That sounded a bit better, but it just didn’t have the IMPACT! of stupid. Someone came up with a term with more impact. So “need to be beat over the head with a clue by four” came into use. It seemed to have a more forceful meaning.

But there was always someone who didn’t know the difference between a two by four and a clue by four. Thus we had to explain all that, so a lot of us geeks gave up and just called them ignorant rather than stupid. It just means they don’t know.

So today I just recommend calling some clueless person ignorant. Hey, we were born that way. Just remember:

2021-03-18 Cat Conv Thief Killed By Car

Anaheim – catalytic converter thief gets killed by a Prius.

https://youtu.be/MYOsN5vmPow

Jenny Torres-Flores said it’s wrong to laugh at the death of a person

Yes, you’re right. But…

Schadenfreude!!

We’re laughing at someone else’s misfortune! Those SOBs have made life miserable for so many people that we can’t help ourselves.

Think about this. It’s wrong to take someone else’s life. But when this catalytic converter thief kills himself because he’s not just a thief, but a stupid thief, why not laugh about it? 👍👍😈😈

The DNI reported that Russia and Iran tried to influence the 2020 election.

Quote:

<< “A key element of Moscow’s strategy this election cycle was its use of proxies linked to Russian intelligence to push influence narratives-including misleading or unsubstantiated allegations against President Biden,” the U.S. intelligence community report states. >>

2021-03-17 CDC Undoing Damage From Trump Admin.

The junk Trump did to the politics wasn’t as damaging as the damage he did to the Center For Disease Control And Prevention. Trumpsters replaced legitimate scientific data with non-scientific, worthless junk, damaging the CDC’s reputation as a non-partisan source of accurate information.

Now the new adminstration is trying to undo the damage that Trumpsters did. It’s shameful.

2021-03-17 Fabbing Shelters

I was watching the construction of the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin Texas on YouTube and saw how they make these big steel tubes on site. They have a machine that feeds a roll of flat steel sheet in, rollers put ribbing in the sheet to stiffen it, and then the sheet is wound into a tube that’s about 8 or 10 feet diameter.

2021-03-16 Lofgren Releases Report Of Repub’s Tweets

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D – Calif) released a nearly 2000 page report compiling social media posts about the 2020 election from House Republicans who voted to overturn the results. The report lays out how some Republicans relentlessly pushed misinformation and conspiracy theories about election fraud, and kept at it even after Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol.

2021-03-14 A Lot More Trees Than Humans

Guy said prove it.

He doesn’t believe it rains diamonds on Neptune.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neptune

Quote:

At a depth of 7,000 km, the conditions may be such that methane decomposes into diamond crystals that rain downwards like hailstones.[63][64][65] Scientists also believe that this kind of diamond rain occurs on Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus.[66][64] Very-high-pressure experiments at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory suggest that the top of the mantle may be an ocean of liquid carbon with floating solid ‘diamonds’.[67][68][69]

He doesn’t believe it. Blocked.
