2020-09-12 Hydrogen Fuel Cells Add Excessive Complexity, Cost

This doesn’t seem to be good for Toyota FCEV, Honda FCX or Hyundai. Toyota has been making FCEVs for more than 2 decades. It would seem they would know what the realities were and are regarding FCEVs. The Honda FCX Concept in 1999 and FCX Clarity from 2008.

The future of heavy vehicles, trains airplanes and ships is hydrogen because hydrogen has a lot of energy per kg, like fossil fuels. Hydrogen may not be a great choice for light vehicles if batteries are improved in the next few years.

2020-09-11 Future Must Include Nuclear Power

Read the paragraphs below. The “…electricity on a dispatchable basis” is not true. Nuclear reactors are meant to be run at full output – “base load”, not throttled on and off to meet demand.

“…we understand how to build…” Is far from the truth. The western countries have seen the recently built NPPs have massive cost overruns and delays of a decade or more. That shows they don’t know how to build nuclear power plants.

The last paragraph is absurd.

Quoted from

https://www.world-nuclear-news.org/Articles/Future-energy-system-must-include-nuclear-says-pan

<< There is simply not another energy technology before us today that can do the things that nuclear can do. Nuclear can provide very large amounts of carbon-free electricity on a dispatchable basis. Nuclear is a technology that is easily expandable under the right situation, that we understand how to build and operate, and we have the ability to use this technology to match with renewables to enable us to be successful.”

Magwood added that if nuclear is not employed in sufficient quantities “then the world is very likely to fail quite miserably in its climate objectives”. >>⁶

2020-09-11 Should Food’s Environmental Damage Be Included In Its Purchase Price?

That thought has occurred to me. I watched a program about ‘food deserts’ on PBS. Locally grown foods have less impact on the environment.

2020-09-10 Model Of Least Cost All Renewables Grid

This is supposed to be a least cost model. Solar reaching up to 4.3 times capacity. I would expect that much of the curtailment would be replaced by “flexible loads” controlled by the grid, most of which would be hydrogen generation. The hydrogen could be stored and used for longer term storage/generation and/or transportation fuel.

2020-09-10 Ultimate Economic Costs Of Climate Change

The effects of climate change in the next century have been calculated at $100 a ton of CO2. This article says that the ultimate costs will be about $100,000 a ton because the effects will last a thousand times longer or 100,000 years.
