2021-09-05 New Mexico Is Going Green

My comment:

New Mexico’s progress is an example that all states should try to emulate.

It’s great to see that most of these projects also have storage. New Mexico is part of the western power grid, and when Texas had the blackout during the February winter storm, the El Paso area was also hooked to New Mexico and they didn’t lose power like the rest of Texas. The New Mexico and Western power grid has been properly winterized; the rest of Texas suffered because they failed to winterize their grid.

Let’s hope New Mexico installs a lot more wind turbines. They have some very good wind resources in the East near Texas. They can generate power around the clock instead of just during daylight.

Here in California we have been importing power generated by coal in the Four Corners area by the native American power plants. They are planning to or already have shut down the coal plants and are going to replace them with renewables, solar, IIRC. Most of the power has been sold to the Los Angeles Dept. Of Water and Power.

2021-09-05 Blue Hydrogen Is Greenwashing By Big Oil

At 13:00 Dave talked about how problematic green hydrogen is, and at 13:30 he said why not just use the electricity directly for the home.

Herein is the whole problem: the solar and wind electricity is generated at times when it is not needed and not generated when it is needed. So we still have to deal with the issue of delaying the electricity by storing it somehow. This could be batteries, or any of the other methods discussed here previously.

In order to provide enough electricity during windless and cloudy days, there has to be enough storage for 3 to 4 times the peak load. Batteries would be too expensive and there aren’t enough. Pumped hydro would be good if enough reservoirs could be built. But those are expensive and have environmental issues. Whatever method is used, it must be very large scale and capable of storing for days or months in the case of use in winter. And there will be so much excess electricity that the round trip efficiency is not important (as so many ‘experts’ have been critical about).

Green hydrogen is proposed by many researchers. Lately I have heard a lot of whining from ‘experts’ about problems that hydrogen has, such as it leaks out of containers and causes steel pipes to become brittle. I counter with the fact that these have already been taken care of by the producers of gray hydrogen. And as Dave has already explained, hydrogen can be changed to ammonia and stored. And Lavo, Homepower Picea, Gencell, Plug Power, Bloom Energy and Ballard have already developed systems that do this using hydrogen.

Dave has brought up some of RethinkX aka Tony Seba’s research, and they get into this same subject in detail. The hydrogen fuel cell plays a major part in systems that store electric power for use at peak times. Toyota, Hyundai, Honda and others already have HFCEVs on the roads. The world must change and abandon fossil fuels as soon as possible, and green hydrogen is a good solution. As Dave said, blue hydrogen is not what it’s made out to be by the hyperbole from the fossil fuels industries.

2021-09-05 Welding Rebar Ends

In this 1 minute short video the worker butt splices the ends of two rebars with a jig that holds the two ends squarely together. He puts a cup around the joint and fills the cup with some kind of flux. He then connects the welding electrode and adjusts the jig so the ends make contact and heat up. After a few seconds the weld is complete and he removes the electrode, cup and jig and goes to the next weld.

2021-09-01 Tab Vs Tabless Cell Design

From what I’ve found, the reason why the 18650 cells are capable of handling the highest current is that the ‘jellyroll’ is shorter than 2170 or larger cells. A single tab handles all current so, for example, if a cell’s tab can handle 1 amp current, the small area of the electrodes get more current per unit area. In the case of 2170, the larger area of the electrodes means that the tab’s 1 amp has to be spread over the larger area, thus it takes longer to charge. To counter this the tab’s current is increased. But the tab’s resistance has not decreased; it’s the same. And in addition the jellyroll is longer and has a higher resistance. So the increased current also increases the power dissipated and the heat in the cell.

So we go from the 2170 to the 4680 *with* a tab. The jellyroll is even longer and the big cell takes even longer to charge at the higher tab current. So generally, the bigger the cell’s diameter, the more current is needed to charge the cell quickly and the more heat will be generated in the cell, both in the tab and in the much longer jellyroll.

This cell scaling limit problem became apparent to cell and battery pack designers and was what drove the cell designers to go to a tabless design. Apparently the tabless design at first had a problem with low yield — only 20% of the 4680 cells produced passed the full tests. That meant 80% were rejects and that was unacceptable for a production line. I haven’t found any information on if the high failure rate was being caused in part by the tabless design. So they have been working for more than a year to lower the number of rejected cells. Now it is down to 20 to 30%.
