Gallium nitride power electronics will replace silicon and will make laptop power adapters smaller than a golf ball and will save major amounts of electricity. GaN devices will waste a lot less power, which will enable power electronics equipment to be made smaller and more efficient.
Quote: “”GaN-based power electronics, on the other hand, could boost power output for electric cars, while making them more energy-efficient and lighter — and, therefore, cheaper and capable of driving longer distances. “Electric vehicles are popular, but still a niche product. GaN power electronics will be key to make them mainstream,” Palacios says.””
They mentioned GaN devices were “always on” as opposed to silicon, which are “always off.” I’m guessing this means the difference between unhancement mode and depletion mode in MOSFETs. The author said transistors but gave no technical information about this.
