This short video tells how the mayor of Fudai, Japan was criticized for spending $30 million on the too tall sea wall. Then when the earthquake and tsunami came in 2011, other cities were devastated but his too tall wall saved the city. Now his grave is honored.
But the sad part of history was that in the late 800s AD and then again a thousand years later in the 1800s there were strong earthquakes and tsunamis that devastated the coastal towns. These were a part of Japanese history. The Japanese failed to heed their own historical records and build higher sea walls. The results were cities that were wiped out and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants suffered severe damage in nuclear meltdowns. If the Japanese had heededd their own historical records and built higher walls, the nuclear power plants would not have melted down and thousands of lives would have been saved.
