If the reports are true, it will be a major breakthrough in autonomous vehicles. It will take some time for the AI to be tested and certified at the appropriate level. Up to now Tesla has stated that FSD was level 2, which requires constant attention from a human driver. There are levels 3, 4 and 5, with 5 being fully autonomous, no human needed. I would expect that the new autonomous software would be level 3 or 4 until it has been fully tested by thousands of drivers for many months or even years. Also even if the FSD passes testing, there will have to be legal, social and political acceptance. This could take a long time because humans will have unreasonable expectations from the software and there will be legal battles that will have to be settled before moving on. That could take years.
