2023-10-26 Sales Of EVs Don’t Increase?? Depressing Article!!

What Happens If EVs Fail In The United States?

After reading this article I came away with a case of acute depression – it’s so “what are we going to do??” Then there’s so much doom and gloom about the political aspects – that can’t be helped by technology.

The financial aspects recently brought up complained about the high interest rates causing car loans to become unaffordable for most Americans. This is nothing new – interest rates have been higher in the past. We should do whatever was done back then to make it possible for consumers to live with the higher interest rates.

But this harping about reducing the costs of EVs would also apply to all cars and consumer goods. Perhaps one partial solution would be to increase the tax gasoline to make EVs more attractive.

And one thing that really bothers me is this constant whining about charging infrastructure. Eighty percent of charging is done at home, so why is charging infrastructure so important? Yes, charging stations are needed for longer trips. But if the range of EV is great enough, the EV can fully get between pit stops that humans must make for intake (food) and output. And slower class 2 charging can be done during sleep time. So considerably more than 80% of charging can be accommodated without using charging stations.

What I see is that the charging infrastructure – because it’s being used 20% or less of the time – is a lower profit and higher risk business that is difficult to justify financially. Those EV makers must have charging infrastructure or drivers will not want an EV – they’ll choose gasoline instead. Selling EVs is dependent on having the charging stations. Tesla realized this so they built their own charging infrastructure. Problem solved. I don’t see any other car companies doing this. NACS may be that common thing that brings all the car companies together and solves the charging problem.

The preceding was my comment at the end of this article.
