I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for people who claim that wind turbines chop up birds – they do not! The sea birds avoid offshore wind turbines. Wind turbines on land are installing surveillance cameras and when they spot a bird close to a wind turbine, that turbine is shut down.
Furthermore, the oil spills from fossil fuels have killed thousands of times more birds than any wind turbine farm. For decades, after oil spills washed up onto the shores, rescuers have tried to save thousands of birds covered in crude oil, unable to fly and dying in the surf and on the shores.
On land there are millions of birds killed by the fossil fuels industries. Especially coal, estimated to kill up to 8 million birds a year.
Quote: “”…the study also concluded that wind is responsible for 0.3-0.4 fatalities per gigawatt-hour, while fossil fuels are responsible for 5.2 per gigawatt-hour — about 15 times as much per unit energy. If we swapped fossil fuels for wind, we would save millions of birds.””
But the worst killer of birds is cats – billions of them per year.
The shills for the fossil fuels industry are pathetic in their claims. During a gas car lifetime, it uses 150 times as much minerals extracted from the earth as an electric vehicle. Electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar farms are going to save the world from annihilation caused by fossil fuels.
[Update] No, Mr. Trump — ‘windmills’ are not going to ‘destroy the bird population.’ Here’s what will
Quote: “”And a Science Direct-published study published in January 2013 stated:
Within the uncertainties of the data used, the estimate means that wind farms killed approximately 20,000 birds in the United States in 2009 but nuclear plants killed about 330,000 and fossil fueled power plants more than 14 million. The paper concludes that further study is needed, but also that fossil fueled power stations appear to pose a much greater threat to birds and avian wildlife than wind farms and nuclear power plants.””
@TheGame
Said, “[Wind and solar] kill so many animals and take up so much space.”
That’s not true with solar. Solar kills *zero* animals. Solar on roofs takes up no needed space – roof space is not used for anything else. And there are solar panels being installed over existing farmland. This is called agrivoltaics – and takes up no additional land. In some countries they are installing the solar panels on floating wind farms on lakes. No land is needed.
That’s not true with wind turbines. Offshore wind turbines take up **no land** at all. And the sea birds do not come near the wind turbines.
The wind turbines on land are mostly located where the wind blows and no people live there because it’s very windy. Even so, they take up very little land. And there are video cameras that shut the turbines off when birds are near.
Both your claims are fake news.
