2020-08-23 Author: Need More Nuclear Reactors & Fusion

<< For one thing, the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow. Therefore, the more wind and solar we add to the grid, the less cost-effective each new panel or turbine becomes. Doubling or tripling the number of turbines available doesn’t help much on days when the wind isn’t gusting. And using batteries to back up a grid that’s mostly powered by wind and solar is not yet feasible on a large scale. >>

No, the Green New Deal is not “disastrous”.

These unprovable claims aren’t stopping the renewables plus storage from replacing the fossil fuels. While the author talks about how they “can be a solution”, the solar, wind and storage solutions are already a solution being built right now. And by the time SMRs like NuScale have built a prototype nuclear reactor in Idaho and get it running in several years, the climate change situation, which is already bad, will be even worse. But the world will be on its way to replacing fossil fuels with renewables and the world will hurry up with even more, **before it’s too late**.

Because the New reactor designs have been so late coming into being, the situation is already very bad. The CCS carbon capture and sequestration will have to be used to ‘catch up’ to reduce the CO2 levels to below 400 PPM. That’s the way to buy more time for fission or fusion to generate power. Greta Thunberg is right.

Update Aug 24 – NuScale was in the news, apparently they had a little setback.
