2025-06-15 Land Use Per Energy Source Sq. Meters Per MWh.

Nuclear is the smallest according to this chart.  But it’s more complicated than this.  The chart doesn’t tell the whole story.   Example: hydroelectric is the largest according to the charts.  But a dam and its reservoir usually have up to 5 uses.  The dam is typically built for flood control.  In addition a dam and reservoir are usually built for irrigation.  The reservoir is often used for fishing.  The reservoir is often used for boating and recreation.  So adding the fifth use, generatig hydroelectric power is *not* adding any more actual space to the dam and reservoir – the dam and reservoir would still take up that space even if no hydroelectricity was generated.

Another example is offshore wind.  Very little space on land is needed.  All the wind turbines are off the coast.  But they don’t show any value for it in the chart
