2013-04-03 Siemens DL 2416T 4 Character LED Display

This is from the 1980s, it’s all red LED segments or dots.  I tried to find an angle where the ceiling light would not show, but because it’s a bubble lens, just about any angle had that white  reflection.  The specifications are available on the ‘net.  The box outlined in red is one of the

2013-03-03 Latest Few Flashers Built, JTs Too

Paul emailed and said he has built his 12th Joule Thief.  Man, this guy is Helen Wheels – an even dozen in a matter of a fortnight (or week or two, I forget which). I’ve been puttering with the TE Flashers.  I made most of them on small pieces of “Woodsie” wood that I got

2013-02-28 Website Of A German LED Distributor

I found this LED website in Germany,  I like it because it’s LEDs, LEDs, and more LEDs, and not an electronics parts distributor.  The LEDs are broken down into various types, standard, high power, etc., etc., etc.  I’m looking for a similar website of a store in the U.S.  I figure it would be best

2013-02-09 Flashers Bowden Style

I have built several of the “Single Cell Flasher With Two Year Battery Life” flashers found at Pigeonsnest.co.uk and they flash for what seems like eternity – they’re real misers when it comes to battery current.  But the flash is somewhat anemic and I had never tried this type flasher with any color LED other

2013-02-05 LEDs In Parallel

If you open up a cheapo 9 LED flashlight you will find that they put 9 LEDs all on the same PC board and they are all connected in parallel.  How do they do this without having the LEDs burn out?  For decades, the engineers have warned us that you should never connect LEDs in

2013-01-04 LED Abuser

Not me, the beasty I made is the LED abuser.  Well, maybe me, too.  See the photo.  I had this high voltage transformer I got a few years ago, and I hooked up a power transistor (2SC2334) to the center tapped winding just like a Joule Thief.  The resistor is 180 ohms wire wound.  It

2012-12-08 2 Transistor High Power “JT”

I tack soldered this two transistor “Joule Thief” V boost circuit together using one of the 100 microhenry low resistance (0.7 ohm) chokes that I bought from Mouser. I wanted a V boost circuit that put heavy current demands on the choke. The schematic for this type of circuit is here.  I made the following

2012-08-19 Repeal Ban on 100W Incandescent Bulbs?

Something is seriously wrong with legislators who take such a radical view of the laws.  This article tells us that some members of congress are trying to repeal a law that is supposed to reduce the use of electricity and save consumers a lot of money.  I think that this is another indication that the

2012-08-13 Thousand Watt Lamp

Bill told us he would like to Steampunk a large lamp, so I volunteered one of the ones I have in my garage.  It’s a biggie!  The regular 75 watt lamp is beside it in the pic. I also have another one similar in size but shaped like the 75 watt lamp, because it’s incandescent.
