2017-12-10 Power Outage And Cell Sites

From FB group Bell Telephone… Paul Triplett If the power where I live went out a lot, I would be looking into why so many outages.  I have had good luck, just a few times in several years.  One time we could hear the boom caused by arc-over.  I went down a few blocks and

2017-11-28 Royal 500 And 3.5mm Phone Jack

I finally got around to spending some time online to search for a replacement jack for the corroded one in the Zenith Royal 500 I’m working on (#473430).  I had to destroy the jack to get the nut off, the whole jack was green.  The hole was so corroded the plug wouldn’t fit.  I ordered

2017-11-21 Phones And Line Levels

From FB group Bell Telephone… In the days of analog phones like 500s and 2500s, Ma Bell had the phone matched to the line, so whatever the line length was, it compensated and the signal levels were very uniform, it worked great. Then came along the full duplex digital system, and everything went to hell.

2017-11-10 Built Phase Shift Oscillator From YouTube

I watched the YouTube video of Radiofun232 testing the PSO that he built according to the schematic he showed.  I modified it somewhat.  My objective was to decrease the frequency down to 400 Hz. I used three 0.1 uF capacitors and a 0.56 uF instead of the 0.47 uF.  Instead of 1k I used 2.2k.  I replaced the

2017-11-08 Using More Than 2 Phones As Intercoms

From FB group Bell Telephone… While I see a discussion about connecting phones in a party line, I’d like some input on this.  It’s easy to connect two phones because they can be connected in series, and both phones have to be off hook.  But more than two phones, they can’t be connected in series

2017-11-03 SAC Caused the Telco CO To Go Into Alarm!

From FB group Bell Telephone… Our Pac Bell account representative would meet with us typically monthly.  We had an IVR system with 36 lines for registering for classes.  We printed the students’ registration mail with one date and time for the opening day, usually a Monday at 10 AM.  Well, our account rep and another

2017-11-02 Dummy Batteries To Hold Power Supply Leads

I made up these dummy batteries to hold the power supply leads in the battery holder.  I used alligator clips, but they pop off, and they can’t be used when the case is on. I cut off short lengths of wood dowel, and drilled holes for the screw and for the wire to pass through.

2017-10-29 Esther Had No Fingerprints

From FB group Bell Telephone… Speaking of federal contracts…  I had a neighbor, Esther, who was 96, and she told me about her husband’s company, Glaser engineering.  During WW 2, they were bidding on some government contract, so they had to be investigated by the FBI.  They had to have their fingerprints taken.  A few

2017-10-28 Old Telephone As Arduino Number Input

The old dial telephone uses pulses of current to dial phone numbers.  I thought it might be useful to enter digits into an Arduino.  I have to investigate if there is already a program that can do this. The phone has to have some current, maybe 10 mA, flowing through it so that the pulses

2017-10-27 Telephone To Desk Light

From FB reply to video of a European gutting a 500 style phone to make a desk light: The ‘giant’ (mini) toggle switch wasn’t the pain;  it was the hole drilled right through the dial that made me cringe.  I would’ve used an invention I made for a project I built.  I put the switch
