2020-10-10 Facebook And Mitigating Climate Change

The thought occurred to me that the climate change controversy is made worse by the echo chambers and information silos that are caused by social media such as YouTube and Facebook. The social media makes polarization worse, there are more us against them due to social media. Mark Zuckerberg may be well intentioned but his social media empire is so pervasive — worldwide — that he could be blamed for the evils it causes as well as its merits.

We have the technology, tools resources to stop climate change before it’s too late, but with those who are arguing for or against climate change at each other’s throats, nothing gets done and stalemate just delays and delays.

I was on a local group on Facebook in which the administrators had an open policy of no moderation. During the time leading up to the 2016 election there was a lot of heated discussions on candidates. There was a lot of disagreement because there were a lot of commenters who were getting their news from different sources. There were versions of the truth that didn’t agree so there was a lot of arguing about which was right or wrong. It’s very divisive, and the arguing most likely didn’t change anyone’s mind. So the administrators decided to clamp down on users and mini moderate the discussions.
