I downloaded the free ElectroDroid app for my Samsung GS4 phone and I’ve been using it to do some simple calculations. It has various calculators, such as battery life; resistor, inductor and capacitor calculators, including resonance; LED resistor calculator; IR drop calculator for wiring and several other calculators. It also has the pinouts for many different connectors.
I have tried several of the above calculators and found them to be useful, with a few minor quirks here and there. I have just barely tried a few of the many features it offers. I can’t say anything negative about this app, and the price can’t be beat. Those experimenters out should try it and see if it proves useful.
There are many other tools in this app. One calculates the resistors for the LM317 adjustable voltage regulator. Another calculates R and C values for the 555 timer chip. Ohm’s Law, capacitor charge/discharge, and many more are available. Try it out!
Two other apps I have installed are a sound level meter and an electromagnetic field meter, both free. I haven’t had the time to give them a good workout, so I can’t say anything pro or con about them. I’ll have to leave them for a future blog.
