2012-10-21 Solar Powered Garden Lights – Ideas

I got to thinking about solar powered garden lights, and it suddenly dawned on me.  I have never seen one as simple as the common as dog doo-doo flashlights that use three AA cells. I’ll have to start with what I have observed in the limited number of garden lights that I’ve opened up and

2012-06-21 Old Photo of Neighbor’s Ham Shack

As I’ve been moving, I have uncovered stuff that I have long forgotten and didn’t realize I had.  Here is an old stained and cracked Polaroid photo of a neighbor’s ham shack and test bench.  I’ll have to see if I can contact him and let him know that this photograph is still around.

2012-06-19 Joule Thief Odd Behavior

I left a few comments on this Youtube Video of a Joule Thief that behaves oddly.  The waveform on his o’scope is the usual JT waveform, but it ‘gallops’ – the tops of the waveform have a periodic change up and down, which seems to change with the scope timebase setting.  He gives a schematic

2012-06-12 Peter’s Joule Thief With Flip-Flop Project

on June 12th, 2012 by - Comments Off on 2012-06-12 Peter’s Joule Thief With Flip-Flop Project

Peter asked in an email what I thought about the schematic he gave a link to in his email.  With his permission I’m quoting his email: I found this on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO0V6foiiy4 I wanna build this (or something like this) as a surprise gift for my wife – the schematic is here: http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/RODALCO/Joulethiefwithflipflop.gif May I

2012-06-07 Harri’s LED Flashlights / Torches

Harri sent me some pictures of his LED flashlight or torch projects.  One uses a circuit similar to my Supercharged Joule Thief but without the resistor.  The other is a two transistor circuit.  With his permission I’ll quote his descriptions of the pictures. Pic1:  This is like your SJT, only diode ditched and resistor value

2012-05-30 Speaking of Fishing: Radioactive Tuna From Japan

on May 30th, 2012 by - Comments Off on 2012-05-30 Speaking of Fishing: Radioactive Tuna From Japan

Speaking of fishing…  Here’s a story that confirms what I discussed in my old blog shortly after the Fukushima Daiichi disaster.   From what I’ve read about the food chain, it leads me to still have concerns about radionuclides concentrating in the fish and other foods we eat. http://news.yahoo.com/radioactive-bluefin-tuna-crossed-pacific-us-190121826.html I was also reading the news online

2012-05-28 Alan Turing The Enigma

I’ve been reading this book on and off for the last week or so, a biography by Andrew Hodges of Alan Turing, who was the one responsible for the ideas of how a computer should be designed.  He wrote the thesis On Computable Numbers which explained the Turing Machine, the basis for the design of

2012-05-18 Watson’s Tiny Toroid Joule Thief

on May 18th, 2012 by - Comments Off on 2012-05-18 Watson’s Tiny Toroid Joule Thief

I had hundreds of pictures in my old watsonseblog blog, which went away when the blog was removed.  I’ve probably got the pics somewhere in the thousands of digital pictures that I’ve taken, but I haven’t got the time or inclination to go back through all of the pics to find them.  So I just

2012-03-08 LM78XX Voltage Regulator Chips

I left a reply in a Yahoo group about power supplies and another commenter left a reply that he used the LM78XX chips often for regulated power supplies, usually without a heatsink.  I would like to relate some of the experiences I’ve had with these wee beasties. Test Equipment   I worked for a company

2012-03-02 Another Joule Thief COP Greater Than Unity

This Overunity Research forum thread seems to be headed in the direction of Steve Jones’ COP greater than unity assertion. http://www.overunityresearch.com/index.php?topic=1171.msg21438;topicseen
