It’s a humidity sensor out of a VCR. If there is the slightest moisture from condensation on the head drum when the VCR starts playing, the tape will stick to the head drum and get wound up into an unholy mess. This sensor is intended to detect conditions under which that might happen and lock out the VCR until it thinks it’s safe. The big aluminium bracket is just the way they are usually mounted.
