2021-01-08 Should Trump Be Removed From Office?

Well, I think that there are problems with removing Trump from office. There is discussion about invoking the 25th Amendment. If Trump was declared unfit then Pence would become president. Then Pence would probably do what Gerald Ford did for Nixon, Pence could pardon Trump. So I think the 25th is a bad idea.

Is there enough time for impeachment? Apparently it doesn’t matter. There is precedent — in the past an official was impeached after he had left office. But there are only 12 days left before Trump has to leave, so is it worth impeaching Trump? I think it’s a waste of time. But Trump could be impeached after he leaves office. If it’s after Jan 20, does that mean the new congress will have been convened? If so, the Senate would be under Democratic control. The House could impeach and the Senate could then convict Trump.

In any case, the opinions of more than 19 thousand viewers is more than 2 to 1 for removing Trump from office. I voted no for the above reasons. See this screenshot from PBS Newshour of Jan 8, 2021.

David Brooks supports Congress censuring Trump under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment. This would prevent him from running for public office. The text of Sec. 3 is as follows.

<< Section 3
No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability. >>
