{"id":5317,"date":"2012-12-14T07:51:07","date_gmt":"2012-12-14T15:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?p=5317"},"modified":"2013-01-09T05:24:43","modified_gmt":"2013-01-09T13:24:43","slug":"2012-12-14-watsons-pancake-joule-thief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?p=5317","title":{"rendered":"2012-12-14 Watson&#8217;s Pancake Joule Thief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=5334\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5334\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5334\" title=\"DSC_0183S6\" src=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_0183S6-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_0183S6-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_0183S6.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I received a Google Alert for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rqGey6leT_o\">Youtube video<\/a> from Mongrel Shark showing Joule Thiefs with his version of Tesla&#8217;s Pancake coils.\u00a0 He refers to and gives the number of the patent Tesla had on this pancake coil (I haven&#8217;t read it yet).\u00a0 He used two coils, each with its own Joule Thief.\u00a0 For some reason he connected them in series, possibly because they don&#8217;t use a resistor and the current would be excessive if a single JT was connected.\u00a0 However he did say that the battery had to be &#8220;flat&#8221;, which presumably means that it is dying or nearly dead.\u00a0 The problem here is that the battery voltage is constantly changing, dropping as the battery dies a slow death.\u00a0 This makes it very difficult to make comparisons because\u00a0 the results, even between the same test. will not be the same after a few minutes have gone by.\u00a0 It would also be a great help if he gave the supply voltage at the start of the test, just so we know how &#8220;flat&#8221; the battery really is.<\/p>\n<p>My Version<\/p>\n<p>I wound about 16 feet (5 M) of 18 AWG speaker cord onto an old CD, spiral wound and in a single layer.\u00a0\u00a0 The inductance measured 33 microhenrys.\u00a0 33uH is below what I would have liked it to be; I would have wound more wire to get it to about 100 uH but I ran out of wire and space on the CD.\u00a0 I will have to look for some thinner speaker cord, maybe 24 AWG, so I can get more turns on the CD.\u00a0 I used wide masking tape to hold it together; duct tape would have done the job as well.<\/p>\n<p>I used a BD433 NPN power transistor in the conventional JT circuit.\u00a0 Instead of 1000 ohms, I used 330 ohms to get a lot more base bias current and more power.\u00a0 The thin cord going off to the left (one wire has a small red sleeve) goes to a 24 blue LED strip about 10 inches long that is rated for 13.8 VDC.\u00a0 This serves as a load so that the voltage across the BD433 doesn&#8217;t become excessive.<\/p>\n<p>I had an air core coil from a previous JT experiment, made by winding two wires bifilar onto an AA cell, then taping the coil up and removing the cell.\u00a0 I connected its two windings in series, which measured 155 uH.\u00a0 I connected two white LEDs in anti-parallel (cathode of one connected to the anode of the other)\u00a0 across the two windings.\u00a0 This became my magnetic field sensor.
