{"id":5218,"date":"2012-12-05T08:05:28","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T16:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?p=5218"},"modified":"2013-08-31T18:38:39","modified_gmt":"2013-09-01T01:38:39","slug":"2012-12-05-linverter-dc-to-dc-converter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?p=5218","title":{"rendered":"2012-12-05 Linverter DC to DC Converter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/?attachment_id=5676\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5676\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5676\" title=\"DSC_0055S4\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_0055S4-300x289.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_0055S4-300x289.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_0055S4.jpg 778w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>About March, 2004 I ordered a kit from eBay IIRC, from a guy in another country, might have been Britain.\u00a0 He called it a Linverter.\u00a0 At that time I didn&#8217;t have that much experience with DC to DC converters.\u00a0 I assembled it, made some modifications to it and learned more about how to get the performance required to drive LEDs to full brightness from a 1.5 volt AA cell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/IMG_20130831_163448.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8445\" alt=\"IMG_20130831_163448\" src=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/IMG_20130831_163448-300x202.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/IMG_20130831_163448-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/IMG_20130831_163448.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The schematic shows what at first looks like a two transistor &#8220;&#8221;Joule Thief&#8221; type V booster, but it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an astable multivibrator with one collector load resistor replaced by a 33 uH choke.\u00a0 The circuit runs fairly fast &#8211; 166 kHz &#8211; and does a good job of driving four white LEDs.\u00a0 However I don&#8217;t think the 120 ohm resistor needs to be that low.\u00a0 I think it could be increased to 220 ohms or more without much penalty in performance.\u00a0 That would save some battery current.\u00a0 I changed the output transistor to a high current one, but the BC337-40 does a good job of putting out current and it&#8217;s much easier to obtain than the one I used.\u00a0 If I needed more current I would just put a second BC337-40 in parallel with the output, but give it its own choke and add the LEDs to it, like the original.\u00a0 This circuit looks similar to the one that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/patents\/US6366028\">CMG patented for their Infinity LED flashlight<\/a>.
