{"id":295,"date":"2011-12-14T23:08:32","date_gmt":"2011-12-15T07:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?p=295"},"modified":"2012-03-14T18:56:03","modified_gmt":"2012-03-15T01:56:03","slug":"2011-12-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?p=295","title":{"rendered":"2011-12-14 VHS Powered Joule Thief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=570\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-570\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-570\" title=\"DSC_0167S2S3\" src=\"http:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC_0167S2S3-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC_0167S2S3-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rustybolt.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/DSC_0167S2S3.jpg 808w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Not all of my many Joule Thiefs are powered by electrochemical means.\u00a0 Some are powered by electromechanical devices.\u00a0 This one is powered by the rotating head assembly of a VHS tape recorder.\u00a0 As can be seen, the motor is a series of coils wound around an armature inside of the rotating magnet, which is attached to the rotating heads.\u00a0 The assembly has enough mass so that a good spin with the fingers produces a bright light for about a second or two.<\/p>\n<p>This motor reminds me of the motors I&#8217;ve seen in 5-1\/4 inch floppy drives.\u00a0 They have a similar armature that has wire wound around the legs, and the wire can be removed to make coils for JTs. This motor has just a few connections so it was easy to check them for continuity and then hook up the JT and see if it lit up when spun.\u00a0 The windings of other motors may be connected differently than this one, but I have not seen any other VHS recorders.\u00a0 All I know is that these are different than the windings of a hard disk drive,which seems to be typical of most brushless DC motors.<\/p>\n<p>This Joule Thief was one where I experimented with the coil.\u00a0 I used very small toroid cores, and I put the feedback winding on a separate core\u00a0 and coupled the two cores together with a single turn link of heavy wire.\u00a0 This works just fine. The two cores are electrically the same as one core.\u00a0 This is the only JT core to which I&#8217;ve done this, probably because I haven&#8217;t though of any reason why it would be of benefit.
