One other point: virtual circuits are not like POTS lines. An incoming call is not like it’s on a dedicated line. I think about it like part of the central office has been moved to the customers’ location. There are trunks from the real CO, but calls to different numbers are being set up and taken down on the same trunk, and that trunk is a virtual bitstream. It’s difficult to explain simply. Another issue that’s behind the scenes is the analog voice is being coded and decoded by the system, and there can be issues with timing and jitter. The fax machines are especially finicky about this.
